Portland, OR: Go For the Food, Stay for the Food–The Street, 8/25/08

August 28, 2008 by alisonwellner

Img_2306I’ve been to Portland four times this year –mostly stops en route to research my upcoming book project in Alaska, it’s a good way to break up the trip from New York and I have access to a free couch there. Happily,  I’ve found that the eating there is just damned fine, one of the top places to dine in the country, in fact.  So in my latest column for the Street, I share some of my faveorite ways to pack on pounds in PDX.  Oh, and at left is a pic of the International Rose Test Garden that I took on an April trip, a nice way to kill time in between meals!

Slow Food staffer Deena Goldman recently had the opportunity to chat with Gail Wadsworth, Slow Food chapter leader and new staff member at the Farmer-Veteran Coalition.  Gail’s work is helping to create healthy and viable futures for veterans by offering them resources, tools and mentorships to get them connected to food and farming communities around the co […]
    • KFC Hopes to Sweeten the Pothole March 30, 2009
Could potholes be the new billboards? Kentucky Fried Chicken is hoping so with a new marketing and urban renewal program. Last week, as part of the chicken chain's "Fresh Tastes Best" campaign, KFC filled potholes as a private sponsor in Louisville, KY - spray-painting each repair with a stenciled memo: "Re-Freshed by KFC." The fast […]
    • Gentleman's Information March 30, 2009
I had always wondered about the composition of Charles H. Baker's two-volume set , The Gentleman's Companion. I own a reprint called Jigger, Beaker and Glass: Drinking Around the World with just drink recipes in it, but wasn't sure from what parts of the originals it came. Luckily I belong to a private library that has both volumes of the book […]
    • Taste-It Notes: Lickable, Flavored Print Ads March 26, 2009
This probably won't save newspapers, but might keep them afloat a few more minutes: lickable ads. The marketing crew behind newspaper ink giant U.S. Ink Corp. have created Taste-It Notes, a peel-and-taste strip, in the same vein as those Listerine strips, that hopes to zazz up the print advertising slump. The company said 1.5 million people have tried T […]
    • Psycho Donuts Takes Doughnuts to the 'Next Demented Level' in California March 27, 2009
Psycho Donuts Psycho Donuts, a doughnut shop/art gallery in Campbell, California, proclaims to have "taken donuts to the next demented level." This level of doughnut dementia includes doughnut fries, a bipolar doughnut (two flavors side-by-side), and a doughnut topped with Nilla Wafers, among other creations that seem to have been born from the min […]
