Over the past few weeks, I’ve been researching Edgar Allan Poe. This is for my in-progress space tourism/sci fi essay, which has led me back to the origins of science fiction, among other places. Do you know Cheng Ho? I’ve been reading about this Chinese Explorer, a fascinating character who deserves to be better known. I’m leaving for the airport to fly to Morocco in just about twenty minutes. I’ve never been before, and the idea of landing in Casablanca, as they claim I’ll be doing by tomorrow morning, sounds impossibly exotic — almost as if I heard that I was flying JFK to Oz. (As in Dorothy and the [...]

I also started to write a weekly essay for the most-excellent Perceptive Travel, while [...]

Today starts my five-part series for World Hum on my quest for the spiciest food I could take. (And there’s video of me talking about it too!) It’s a story that took several years to research and then a long while to write, but I’m pretty proud of it, so have a look! Part One: [...]

I’m getting started on background research for a piece about Barbados, and came across this book which published earlier this week: Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean: How a Generation of Swashbuckling Jews Carved Out an Empire in the New World in Their Quest for Treasure, Religious Freedom–and Revenge by Edward Kritzler. Jewish pirates –oh what [...]
